WVU Student-Journalists Use DIY Sensors to Investigate Water Quality
West Virginia is fortunate to have a lot of sources of water. It's mountain streams feed the Potomac and Ohio Rivers, among others. But the state also has its share of water pollution. And some of this pollution stems from years of coal mining that happened before environmental regulations were in place. This audio story by Colleen Good and Shishira Sreenivas reveals a community concerned about possible water pollution from a new coal mine. The student journalists used DIY sensors to try to gather their own water quality data. In the end, the sensors didn't work as expected, but the process of doing sensor journalism brought the students closer to the story subject and resulted in a more authentic public interest story that aired on West Virginia Public Radio.
